In celebration of its 40th anniversary, SM Supermalls has unveiled the largest rooftop solar panel system on a commercial building in the Philippines at SM City Fairview, marking a bold step toward environmental sustainability and resilience.
The SM Fairview Solar Panel system boasts a 3.785-Megawatt peak (MWp) capacity and features 6,882 solar modules across 4.3 hectares. This massive installation is expected to generate up to 5,960 Megawatt-hours (MWh) annually, which accounts for 11% of the mall’s yearly energy needs. In practical terms, it’s enough to power all 44 escalators and every mall and perimeter light at SM City Fairview for the next two and a half years.
This development is a major contribution to SM Prime Holdings’ Net Zero 2040 goal, preventing the release of 4,133 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. The installation, in partnership with Buskowitz Energy, not only reduces reliance on the national grid but also strengthens support for the Philippine government’s renewable energy agenda.
SM’s solar journey began in 2014 at SM North EDSA, which had a 1.5MW peak solar PV system. Since then, the company has steadily expanded its solar footprint, with the SM Fairview Solar Panel project now surpassing SM City Santa Rosa’s previous record of 3.088MW peak.
With SM Prime’s total rooftop solar capacity currently at 73-MWp and projected to reach 100-MWp by year-end, Mr. Hans T. Sy, Chairman of SM Prime’s Executive Committee, continues to lead the way in sustainability—covering energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management programs.
