Starting August 2, 2023, commuters using the LRT-1 and LRT-2 rail lines in the Philippines will experience an increase in fares. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that the fare adjustment is necessary to improve the services, amenities, and technical aspects of both rail systems. The decision has been made to secure funds for operating expenses, maintenance, repairs, and the overall upkeep of critical rail infrastructure.
Funding Requirements
The DOTr Assistant Secretary for Railways, Jorjette Aquino, emphasized the need for additional funds to support the LRT-1 and LRT-2 systems. Approximately Php110 million is required to cover operating expenses and maintain the essential rail systems and facilities. To generate this funding, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) will utilize 97 percent of the projected Php114 million in additional income resulting from the fare adjustment.
Improvements and Enhancements
A significant portion of the budget allocation will be dedicated to improving the turnaround time of equipment and ensuring the timely implementation of preventive maintenance programs. These measures aim to optimize the performance of the LRT-1 and LRT-2 systems, providing commuters with a more reliable and efficient travel experience.
Fare Adjustment Details
Prior to the fare hike, the DOTr’s Rail Regulatory Unit approved petitions requesting an increase in the boarding fee by Php2.29 and an additional Php0.21 per kilometer traveled on LRT-1 or LRT-2. As a result, commuters can expect a minimum boarding fee of Php13.29 (up from Php11) and an increase in the fare to Php1.21 per kilometer (previously Php1).
Government Approval
The fare adjustment received the endorsement of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista during a Cabinet meeting held on June 6. The decision was made in line with the government’s commitment to improving public transportation infrastructure and services. Aquino confirmed that the necessary approvals and discussions with relevant authorities, such as the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), took place to communicate the upcoming price increase.
The fare hike for the LRT-1 and LRT-2 rail lines, scheduled to take effect on August 2, 2023, aims to secure the necessary funds for the maintenance and improvement of these crucial transportation systems. While commuters will experience an increase in fares, the funds generated will be utilized to enhance the overall quality and reliability of the LRT-1 and LRT-2 services, ensuring a better travel experience for passengers in the long run.
