In response to the impending transport strike scheduled to commence on April 15, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has announced plans to alleviate the burden on affected commuters by offering free rides through its “Libreng Sakay” program.
The decision comes as a proactive measure following earlier declarations by transport groups of their intention to initiate a series of strikes starting April 15. These actions are in protest against the looming deadline for the consolidation of Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) franchises, set for April 30.
“The LTFRB will adhere to its standard operating procedure by coordinating with relevant government agencies and LGUs should a transport strike push through,” stated the LTFRB in a release.
“Rest assured, ‘Libreng Sakay’ vehicles will once again be dispatched to assist affected commuters,” the statement assured.
The agency reiterated its stance that jeepney operators must undergo consolidation before the deadline to avoid the risk of having their franchises revoked.
Additionally, the LTFRB urged those participating in the transport strike to refrain from impeding other jeepney drivers from conducting their operations.
The provision of free rides during times of transport disruption has been a recurring initiative by the LTFRB, aimed at mitigating the inconvenience faced by commuters amidst strikes and other similar events affecting public transportation.
As April 15 approaches, both commuters and stakeholders will be closely observing developments to ascertain the impact and extent of the scheduled strike on the public transport landscape.
