The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is set to launch a cashless payment system for the LRT and MRT lines starting July 2025. This long-anticipated upgrade will give daily commuters the convenience of simply tapping their phones, debit or credit cards at station turnstiles—no more long lines or scrambling for small bills.
The new Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system supports mobile wallets like GCash and Maya, as well as bank-issued cards, ushering in an open-loop payment experience similar to systems in cities like Singapore and Tokyo.
“This upgrade is about improving accessibility and efficiency,” said DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, who emphasized that the system aligns with global best practices in transit technology. Notably, cashless GCash payments are already accepted on the MRT-3, and the DOTr is eager to expand this convenience network-wide.
The first phase of the rollout will see cashless turnstiles installed at key LRT and MRT stations this July. To ensure a smooth transition, the department is coordinating with rail operators and financial service providers for pilot testing, user education, and public awareness campaigns.
Commuters can look forward to faster entry, reduced congestion, and a more seamless travel experience—a small tap for passengers, a giant leap for Metro Manila’s public transport future.
