What started as a dream has finally become a powerful musical statement. Indie-pop artist SUYEN and iconic OPM rock band Sandwich have come together for a bold new collaboration—“Basura”—a track that hits hard both sonically and socially.
The song, released on May 9, was born from SUYEN’s long-time wish to work with the band she’s admired since childhood. Signed under Filtered Music, the rising soloist had openly talked in interviews about wanting to collaborate with other Filipino acts after the release of her debut EP “Suyen Imnida.” When the opportunity arose through her label and Sandwich’s home, PolyEast Records, the stars aligned.
And they delivered.
“Basura” is more than a track—it’s a statement. Tackling the increasing toxicity in online spaces, the song calls out digital hate, fake news, and cancel culture. With biting lyrics and layered melodies, it highlights how careless words can have real-world impact, not just on individuals, but also on their loved ones.
“There are children, partners, families, friends, and careers that get caught in the crossfire,” says Raymund Marasigan, Sandwich’s frontman. The band hopes that the song sparks a conversation on empathy in the digital age.
For SUYEN, the experience was creatively transformative. Known for her solo writing process, she found it refreshing to collaborate with seasoned artists like Sandwich. “It was inspiring to witness a different approach to melody and rhythm—it pushed me out of my comfort zone,” she shared.
Sandwich, on the other hand, embraced the shift in dynamic with open arms. The collaboration encouraged them to loosen up, play around with structure, and rediscover the joy of experimentation. The end result? A sonic blend that’s fresh yet true to their roots—familiar to long-time fans but with new emotional depth.
Now streaming on all major platforms, “Basura” is more than a new release—it’s a mirror to the times. It’s the sound of artists standing up, speaking out, and turning noise into something meaningful.
Stream “Basura” by SUYEN x Sandwich now on Spotify, Apple Music, and more.
