From its historic roots to a future-ready vision, PSU symbolizes Kapampangan pride and progress.

A new era begins for one of the Philippines’ oldest and most respected public higher education institutions as Don Honorio Ventura State University (DHVSU) officially transitions to Pampanga State University (PSU)—a move made official through Republic Act No. 12148, the Revised DHVSU Charter.

The renaming reflects more than just a legal change. It embodies a deeper cultural evolution—one that unites the university’s rich legacy with the aspirations of a new generation of Kapampangans.

From Heritage to Progress

Established in 1861 as Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Bacolor, the institution has stood the test of time, adapting to changes across centuries. It became Bacolor Trade School in 1905, Pampanga Trade School in 1909, and later the Don Honorio Ventura Memorial School of Arts and Trades in 1964—paying tribute to its namesake, a revered Kapampangan philanthropist.

In 2019, it earned its university status as Don Honorio Ventura State University. Now, as Pampanga State University, the institution steps into a new chapter rooted in regional identity and academic excellence.

Celebrating Change

On June 27, students, faculty, alumni, and local officials gathered for a celebratory ceremony to commemorate the official name change. The event was headlined by Former Pampanga 3rd District Representative Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales, who authored the bill leading to the university’s renaming.

“It gives our students a stronger sense of identity,” Gonzales remarked. “When someone asks, ‘Where did you graduate?’ and you answer, ‘Pampanga State University,’ it immediately says something about your roots—you carry the pride of being Kapampangan.”

He assured attendees that the change respects the institution’s legacy. The Bacolor main campus will now bear the name PSU – DHVSU Campus, keeping the memory and contributions of Don Honorio Ventura alive.

Looking Forward

PSU President Dr. Enrique Baking described the renaming as part of a strategic vision to future-proof the university.

“We’re not abandoning our past. We are building on it,” Dr. Baking shared. “This change allows us to unlock more opportunities—particularly in program expansion and national funding.”

Among the upcoming plans is the establishment of a College of Medicine and additional allied health programs, extending the university’s service reach to more students throughout the province.

A Regional Beacon of Learning

As it adopts its new identity, Pampanga State University carries a clear mission—to be a beacon of learning for all Kapampangans, providing accessible, quality education that uplifts lives and communities.

With pride in its roots and purpose in its path, PSU stands ready to serve the next generation of leaders, professionals, and changemakers.
