Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft-focused organization, celebrates supporting over 75,000 cleft surgeries in the Philippines, recognizing the transformative power of art through its Art Impact for Health initiative. In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), this global endeavor aims to promote healing, communication, and enhanced psychosocial well-being for cleft-affected patients.
Facing ongoing stigma and mistreatment, individuals with cleft conditions often struggle with negative self-image and low self-esteem, making holistic care vital beyond surgical procedures. Smile Train acknowledges that comprehensive cleft care involves not just surgery but also speech therapy, orthodontic treatment, nutrition, and psychosocial support.
To commemorate their 75,000 surgery milestone, Smile Train, in partnership with WHO and the Philippine Band of Mercy, organized an art workshop to unite and empower the cleft community. Attended by patients, families, advocates, and representatives, including Miss Universe Philippines 2023’s winner and runners-up, the workshop aims to help cleft-affected individuals discover healing and empowerment through self-expression and art.
“Healing and health go beyond medical procedures. Psychosocial well-being plays a crucial role in recovery and resilience,” says Mamta Carroll, Senior Vice President and Regional Director for Smile Train Asia. “Through the Art Impact for Health initiative, Smile Train is proud to collaborate with the World Health Organization to support cultural and art activities that promote well-being and health for all.”
Moreover, the workshop raises awareness and combats stigma surrounding cleft conditions, which affect thousands of children in the Philippines annually.
For years, Smile Train has been dedicated to a sustainable and local approach in providing free cleft care and treatment services, making transformative change possible for Filipino children born with cleft conditions. Their holistic programs, including telehealth services and comprehensive cleft care centers, address the whole patient, instilling confidence and enabling them to thrive in school, the community, and the workplace.
