The award-winning musical that took Broadway, West End, and even TikTok by storm has finally arrived in the Philippines—and yes, Come From Away lives up to the hype.

Through its ongoing partnership with GMG Productions, UnionBank brings Filipino audiences another top-tier theatrical experience. This time, it’s Come From Away, a musical that masterfully weaves real-life events, unforgettable music, and raw human emotion into a 100-minute journey of compassion and community.

A Story That Moved the World

Set in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland, Come From Away recounts the true story of 6,600 passengers from 38 planes who were stranded during the U.S. airspace closure following the 9/11 attacks. Amid uncertainty and global fear, the residents of Gander opened their homes and hearts—offering shelter, food, and comfort to thousands of displaced strangers.

This deeply human tale of kindness and resilience is elevated by the music and lyrics of Irene Sankoff and David Hein, brought to life in Manila by a powerhouse Filipino cast.

Filipino Excellence On Stage

Directed by Michael Williams, the Manila run of Come From Away features a remarkable all-Filipino ensemble that seamlessly transforms into multiple characters—passengers, townsfolk, and everyone in between.

Carla Guevara Laforteza delivers an emotional standout as Hannah O’Rourke, a mother worried for her son who’s a firefighter in New York. Her rendition of “I Am Here” is both haunting and deeply moving. Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, revered as the First Lady of Philippine Theater, commands the stage as pilot Beverley Bass in her poignant solo “Me and the Sky.”

Sheila Francisco exudes warmth as Beulah Davis, while Stephen Cadd as Gander’s mayor brings comic relief. George Schulz and Topper Fabregas shine as Kevin T. and Kevin J., a couple navigating unfamiliar territory, while Caisa Borromeo charms as animal-loving Bonnie Harris. Cathy Azanza-Dy and Rycharde Everley, as Diane and Nick, embody unexpected romance with quick-witted banter and genuine chemistry.

Music That Moves and a Message That Resonates

The show wastes no time drawing in the audience. From the opening number “Welcome to the Rock” to emotionally charged songs like “Prayer” and “Something’s Missing,” the score tugs at heartstrings while celebrating the power of community.

The staging is minimalist yet effective. With subtle set transitions, precise choreography, and emotive performances, the production relies not on spectacle, but storytelling—inviting the audience to focus on every word, glance, and harmony.

More Than Just a Musical—A Message for Today

What truly elevates Come From Away is its heart. It’s a celebration of humanity’s ability to care, connect, and rise above fear—values that resonate deeply with Filipino audiences. In a time where global uncertainty still looms, this musical reminds us that even in darkness, empathy and kindness can shine the brightest.
