OpenAI has officially rolled out its latest flagship AI model, GPT-4.1, to all paid ChatGPT users. In an announcement made Wednesday, the company revealed that both GPT-4.1 and the new GPT-4.1 mini are now accessible through the model picker for Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. While free-tier users won’t have immediate access to GPT-4.1, OpenAI confirmed that Enterprise and Education users will receive the upgrade in the coming weeks.
The upgrade replaces the previous GPT-4o mini with the more capable GPT-4.1 mini, now set as the default model for all ChatGPT users, including those on free accounts. GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini bring across-the-board improvements, especially in code generation, instruction following, and reasoning performance.
One of the most notable features of these new models is their enhanced context window: both support up to one million tokens — a massive leap from GPT-4o’s 128,000-token limit. OpenAI also emphasized improvements in speed and efficiency, making GPT-4.1 more practical for daily developers and tech professionals.
Although GPT-4.1 Nano, touted as OpenAI’s lightest and most affordable model, was launched last month for developers, it’s notably missing from this consumer-facing rollout. Its availability on ChatGPT remains uncertain.
As OpenAI continues refining its AI lineup, the inclusion of GPT-4.1 and its mini variant signals the company’s commitment to delivering high-performance, multimodal tools for a broader user base — especially those working in development, instruction-heavy applications, and fast-paced AI tasks.
