YouTube Music is making waves with its latest experimental feature, an AI-driven tool that allows users to create custom radio stations simply by asking. This innovative feature, discovered by a Reddit user named kater_pro, is currently being tested with a select group of users.
The new addition will introduce an “Ask for music any way you like” card on the Home feed. This vibrant card, featuring a mix of purple and pink colors, resembles the existing “Create a radio: Your music tuner” card found in the Library tab. By selecting this new card, users will engage with a chat-based interface where they can request music through voice or text input.
For example, a request for “Queer Hip Hop Beats” resulted in a station that the AI described as “Rhymes and flows from the heart, a celebration of queer pride in hip hop’s art.” The interface also presents users with various suggested prompts like “Catchy pop choruses,” “Epic soundtracks,” and “Upbeat pop anthems,” along with a “Surprise me!” option for a randomly generated station.
Once a prompt is entered, the AI generates a radio station, which is presented in the familiar playlist card format. Each station is named after the prompt and labeled “Created for you,” complete with a matching description. YouTube Music has included a note reminding users that “AI-generated responses are experimental,” suggesting that the quality and accuracy of the generated stations may vary. It also advises users against sharing any personal or confidential information.
As this feature undergoes testing with a limited audience, music enthusiasts are eager to see how YouTube Music’s venture into generative AI playlist-making compares to similar offerings from competitors like Spotify.
