PhilHealth Expands Leptospirosis Coverage to Up to ₱411,000 Starting July 15

PhilHealth is expanding its benefit package for moderate to severe leptospirosis, giving patients higher financial protection as the rainy season raises the risk of flood-related infections.

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation will expand its coverage for moderate to severe leptospirosis cases starting July 15, with benefits reaching up to ₱411,000 for qualified patients who need intensive treatment.

The new package is meant to help reduce the financial burden on Filipino families, especially during the rainy season when exposure to floodwater and contaminated soil can increase the risk of leptospirosis.

According to PhilHealth Circular No. 2026-0008, the expanded benefit package covers moderate to severe leptospirosis managed in hospitals. The policy applies to accredited Level 1 to Level 3 health facilities and is part of PhilHealth’s effort to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients.

Higher coverage for severe cases

Under the expanded package, PhilHealth will cover ₱63,000 for moderate to severe leptospirosis.

For cases that require more complex treatment, the coverage is higher. Patients may receive ₱170,000 if hemodialysis and vascular access are needed, ₱230,000 for peritoneal dialysis and PD solutions, ₱325,000 for hemodialysis and hemoperfusion, and up to ₱411,000 for cases requiring hemodialysis, ventilatory support, and pulmonary rehabilitation.

This is a major increase from the previous amount for admissions before the effectivity of the new circular, which PhilHealth placed at ₱21,450.

Why this matters to Filipino families

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease commonly linked to exposure to water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals. It becomes a bigger public health concern during floods, heavy rains, and cleanup operations after bad weather.

The Presidential Communications Office said the expanded benefits will be implemented on July 15. It also reported that the Department of Health recorded 2,177 leptospirosis cases from January 4 to June 6, 2026, a six percent increase compared with the same period.

For ordinary families, the new coverage matters because severe leptospirosis can lead to kidney failure, breathing problems, and other complications that require dialysis, ventilation, and longer hospital care.

Who can avail of the benefit

PhilHealth said all Filipinos are eligible to avail of the benefit package for moderate to severe leptospirosis. Accredited health facilities are also reminded that claims submission does not require a printed copy of the Member Data Record, and PhilHealth benefits should be deducted upon patient discharge.

The circular also states that patients admitted in basic or ward accommodation should have no copayment for covered essential services. Accredited public and private hospitals should not charge or balance bill these patients for services covered under the policy.

Mild cases and early treatment

For mild leptospirosis cases that do not require hospital admission, PhilHealth said coverage may be accessed through YAKAP, PhilHealth GAMOT, and the Outpatient Emergency Care benefits package. The agency also highlighted early detection and post-exposure antibiotic prophylaxis as part of its preventive approach.

This means patients should seek medical advice early, especially after flood exposure or contact with contaminated water or mud.

Common warning signs may include fever, headache, chills, muscle pain, red eyes, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, decreased urination, difficulty breathing, or bleeding.

What readers should remember

The expanded PhilHealth coverage gives patients and families stronger support against one of the most serious flood-related diseases in the country.

As rainy days continue, the message is clear: avoid floodwater when possible, wear protective boots, wash exposed skin with soap and clean water, and seek medical care early if symptoms appear.

For families facing severe leptospirosis, the new benefit package can help make hospital treatment more accessible and less financially overwhelming.
