Spotify Premium is now more expensive in the Philippines, with prices starting at PHP 149 per month. This price hike, while not welcomed by users, reflects Spotify’s strategy to enhance profitability in a competitive market. Let’s take a closer look at the recent changes in Spotify’s pricing structure and how it compares to its competitors.

Price Adjustments in the Philippines

Initially excluded from the list of countries affected by Spotify’s subscription price increase, the Philippines has now joined the ranks of nations experiencing higher costs for premium access. Here’s a breakdown of the new Spotify Premium pricing in the Philippines:

  • Individual Plan: PHP 149/month (up from PHP 129)
  • Duo Plan: PHP 199/month (up from PHP 185)
  • Family Plan (6 accounts): PHP 239/month (up from PHP 214)
  • Premium Student Plan: PHP 75/month

For those who prefer shorter commitments:

  • Per Day: PHP 7
  • Per Week: PHP 26

These adjustments are set to take effect in December 2023, allowing current subscribers a few more months of the current pricing. However, it’s essential to note that Spotify had quietly introduced these price increases for new users last year, making this announcement a reminder of the impending changes for existing subscribers.

Spotify vs. Apple Music

With these price hikes, Spotify’s individual subscription will be more expensive than its competitor, Apple Music, which offers a similar plan at PHP 139/month. Additionally, Spotify’s family plan, priced at PHP 239/month for up to 5 users, edges closer to Apple Music’s family plan, which costs PHP 219/month and accommodates up to 6 users.

However, it’s worth considering that each platform has its unique strengths. Apple Music, for instance, offers lossless streaming at up to 24-bit/192kHz, providing audiophiles with higher-quality sound compared to Spotify Premium’s 320Kbps AAC format.

On the other hand, Spotify distinguishes itself through its extensive playlist curation and innovative features, such as AI-powered DJ capabilities, which enhance the user experience.

The Bigger Picture

As Spotify adapts its pricing structure to increase profitability, it’s clear that the streaming music industry remains highly competitive. The platform’s enduring status as the world’s largest music streaming service suggests that users still value its offerings, even as prices rise.

Despite these changes, Spotify Premium subscribers continue to enjoy benefits like no ads, unlimited listening, and the option to download songs for offline enjoyment. Furthermore, the platform’s cross-border accessibility remains a valuable feature for users who travel frequently or have international interests.

As the music streaming landscape evolves, users must weigh the costs against the features and experiences that matter most to them. Whether you choose Spotify, Apple Music, or another service entirely, the key is finding the platform that suits your preferences and budget.
