Spotify has rolled out a new update to its AI-powered feature, Spotify DJ, allowing Premium users to request songs using only their voice—just like asking a real-life DJ at a party, but without the risk of side-eye from friends.
According to a press release published Tuesday, the new voice command capability allows Spotify DJ to take real-time song suggestions and preferences using natural language. Users can now say things like, “Play some early 2000s hits” or “Give me house music to get ready for Coachella,” and Spotify DJ will deliver a curated playlist complete with commentary. Whether it’s 50 Cent, Britney Spears, or some low-tempo indie tracks for winding down, Spotify DJ adapts to the listener’s mood, activity, or genre of choice.
The feature is powered by DJ X—Spotify’s AI voice modeled after Xavier Jernigan—who even demonstrated the update in a quirky video on X (formerly Twitter). Users can access the feature through the search tab, select the DJ playlist, and hold the DJ button to speak their requests.
The voice-request function is now live for Spotify Premium users across more than 60 countries, bringing the dream of a personalized, judgement-free DJ experience to living rooms, car rides, and gym sessions around the world.
