Reasons why SM Malls e-Vehicle chargers are game changers

SM Supermalls in NCR pioneers the first ever in-mall installment of free e-Vehicle (EV) chargers in the country for those with vehicles that are fueled by electricity. This launch is part of SM Supermalls’ principle to provide its constituents with a greener and eco-friendly future.

The free EV chargers were simultaneously deployed at Sm Aura in Taguig City, SM North Edsa in Quezon City, SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, and SM Megamall in Mandaluyong. They offer free charging to EV brands such as BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and others more.

In partnership with the Department of Energy, Department of Transportation, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Science and Technology, and Department of Trade and Industry, SM Supermalls continuously develop projects like these to aid the government with its drives for sustainability.

The increase in EV charging stations may initiate the rise of e-Vehicles in the Philippines which is a more environmentally-friendly side. As of 2020, here are 12,965 registered EVs in the country.

Here are some reasons why these EV charger installments are life-changing today and in the long run:

Convenient Charging

Since there are only a limited number of EV charging stations in the country, the start of these EV chargers in select SM Supermalls gives EV motorists more accessibility on where they could fuel up their vehicles.

e-Vehicles can usually be powered up at home too as they could be charged up at night and used up the next morning. However, in times when people may find their EV batteries with not enough charge throughout the day, they could just pull up into these select SM supermalls and plug their car in the parking lot. They could stay inside the mall while waiting and do their weekly groceries, window shopping, eat meals, among others.

Promotes Better Air Quality

These SM Supermall EV chargers may influence a lot of people to switch to e-Vehicles once they see that a lot of chargers are readily available. EVs provide true zero carbon dioxide emission as they run in electric motors instead of internal combustion engines and with no tailpipe.

With the huge amount of greenhouse gas emissions decreased with the advent of the growing e-Vehicle use, air pollution will consecutively reduce and the streets would be cleaner giving motorists and pedestrians a better place to live in.

Cuts Oil Use

Aside from zero emission, e-Vehicles also use zero oil for their engine. It is widely known that car oil adds up to countless environmental impacts that oil brings up. From its extraction from the earth which damages a lot of land up to its waste disposal causing oil pollution in water, air, and land, cutting oil use by EVs will provide a large-scale change to the environment for the better.

The SM supermall EV chargers operate purely on electricity and fuels up EV cars the same. According to studies, carbon emissions from electricity generation of e-Vehicles are considerably still 30% lower than petrol or diesel cars. Additionally, a lot of companies offering EV charging are making efforts to incorporate renewable electric energy instead for a true emission free experience.

Free Charging Lessens Costs

The SM Supermalls e-Vehicle chargers are free. This is no doubt a greater option as compared with the recent massive oil price hike. Other electricity providers that offer rates for charging still have prices that are relatively cheaper than gasoline.

It is undeniable that buying an e-Vehicle would cost you more as it is a newer technology, however, if you think about it in the long run, you are actually going to save up a lot of costs such as maintenance costs as EVs would not require oil changes, spark plugs, or timing belts since they do not have gasoline engines.

SM Supermalls President Steven T. Tan shares “SM Supermalls will remain true to our promise of creating a safe malling experience for our mallgoers, and part of that commitment is building a greener environment for everyone. We will always strive to ramp up our efforts to give back to our communities through our innovative projects in driving sustainability in our 79 malls nationwide. We want to urge everyone to consider more sustainable options in their everyday life, and shifting to e-Vehicles is a giant leap towards a greener future for all of us.”
